Water Cabinet Secretary, Sicily Kariuki, has opened up about the surprising nature in which she was appointed into President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Cabinet.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, the CS disclosed that she learnt about her hiring to head the Devolution Ministry in 2015 during a TV broadcast.

Kariuki further noted that earlier that day, she had been contacted and asked not to leave Nairobi City at the request of the Head of State.

“The promotion to the Cabinet which happened on November 24, 2015, came to me as a surprise like it did to other Kenyans. 24th was a Thursday. I recall that (at the time), I sat on the board of International Council for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) and I was up in Gigiri having a board meeting.

“I received a call and I was told, ‘Your are needed out. Don’t go out of town, the boss may wish to have a word with you’,” she stated.

After getting the call, she added, she spent the afternoon in angst not knowing what was in store for her.

“You quickly begin thinking about what has gone wrong. Have I done something that is not right? The rest of the afternoon I could not work because I was just anxious.

“We did not have the conversation as I had been prepared and in the evening, there was the news of a Cabinet reshuffle. Like every other Kenya, I was watching and listening. It just got me by surprise,” stated Kariuki.

Since joining the public service, Kariuki’s career has been on an upward trajectory since she served as a Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture.

In her interview, she noted that she was at the forefront of developing the footprint on which the then newly established Devolution Ministry would base its operation.

In the Cabinet, she has handled some influential Ministries including that of Public Service as well as the Health docket.

Apart from that, Kariuki is also a respected businesswoman having served as an officer at the Kenya Investment Authority as well as the Managing Director of Tea Board of Kenya.
